A festive season full of kindness

This Christmas, elves really did come to London. Local businesses, volunteers and friends of the baby bank joined forces for our festive toy collection, gathering new toys, books and games for children in the families we support.

Back at the stockroom, our volunteers worked late into the evenings sorting gifts by age, wrapping each one and labelling it for a specific child. Referrers then collected the gifts and delivered them in time for the big day.

“Seeing the bags lined up, each with a child's name on the label, was one of the most moving moments of our year,” said one of our volunteer coordinators.

Launching our maternity hospital bags

Midwives told us that some women were arriving to give birth with nothing packed — no pads, no change of clothes, nothing for their baby to wear home. So we created a maternity bag programme.

Each bag contains maternity and breast pads, toiletries, a towel, comfortable clothing, a notebook to record those first precious days, and a going-home outfit and nappies for baby. A handwritten card is tucked inside every bag.

Midwives and health visitors can request a maternity bag through our referral form.

“You made our first weeks so much easier”

Every so often, a letter arrives that stops us in our tracks. This one came from a mum who had received a newborn bundle a few weeks after moving into temporary accommodation.

“I want you to know how grateful we are. My baby has warm clothes and a safe bed, and I felt cared for at a time when I felt very alone. Thank you to everyone who packed our bag.”

Letters like this are shared with our whole volunteer team — a reminder that every carefully folded sleepsuit matters.
